Back Up your SHSH Blobs Before It’s Too Late

I don’t exactly understand the concept behind backing up your devices SHSH Blobs, but apparently it allows you to restore from 4.1, for example, back down to 4.0. If the SHSH Blobs aren’t backed up, you’re pretty much out of luck as far as I know.

That being said, MuscleNerd posted the following on Twitter:

The 4.0 window for 3GS, ipt3G, + iPhone4 SHSH blobs is closing soon! Backup your blobs using http://is.gd/dskh9 or Cydia

You can use Tiny Umbrella or Cydia (if it’s already on your device) to back up your SHSH Blobs.

  1. Device does NOT need to be Jailbroken in order to save SHSH
  2. It does not matter what firmware version is on the device TinyUmbrella will get the currently signed firmware by default.
  3. TinyUmbrella saves the file locally AND sends the request to Cydia so Cydia will have the SHSH as well.
  4. If Cydia’s TSS server is down, your only option will be to use TinyUmbrella for restoring through iTunes
Download TinyUmbrella:

Android Running on iPhone with OpeniBoot

You may vaguely remember us telling you about OpeniBoot sometime ago, well, planetbeing has done a significant amount of progress since then, quietly, of course, till now. He’s managed to get Android running on a first-generation iPhone (EDGE/2G).

Video says it all.

Hopefully with all this groundwork laid out, we can make Android a real alternative or supplement for iPhone users. Maybe we can finally get Flash. ;)

Apparently, it currently only works on the first-gen EDGE/2G iPhone but planetbeing says it should be a simple port to the iPhone 3G — However, it’ll take more work to port to the iPhone 3GS

If you have a first-gen iPhone and you wish you had Android or want the best of both worlds, this is for you — especially if you want Flash on iPhone!

iPhone Dev Team Releases PwnageTool 4.0.1 — Jailbreak iOS 4

Sorry for the delay, I somehow missed this. Anyway, the iPhone Dev Team have updated their jailbreaking tool, PwnageTool, to jailbreak the latest and greatest, iOS 4.

Remember, PwnageTool is Mac OS X only.

Since iOS 4 isn’t compatible with a number of Apple devices, these devices are not compatible with PwnageTool v4.0.1:

  • IPhone 2G – not supported
  • iPod Touch – not supported
  • iPod Touch 3G – not supported

iPhone 3GS:
Summary: Currently, PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.

  • If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0.1 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode.
  • If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.01

iPhone 3G:

  • If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.01 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.
  • If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.01 ipsw using DFU mode.
  • If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.

IMPORTANT! Whenever you need to enter DFU mode, you will need to do so using PwnageTool.

iPod touch 2G:

  • If you have an iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) that is jailbroken (but not with Spirit) then you can restore using recovery mode.
  • As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on non-MC iPod Touch 2G (on both Windows and Mac).

Baseband Unlock:

  • As you probably know by now, ultrasn0w has been updated to cover all basebands from 04.26.08 onward. Many thanks to @sherif_hashim for finding the crashing command that the new ultrasn0w 0.93 uses! He worked hard at finding the crash, and he kept it confidential until the right time to use it.
  • Major props to @oranav (who found the earlier +xlog crash). He also had this crashing command!
  • iPhone 3G and 3GS baseband unlockers (those who rely on ultrasn0w to make phone calls) should always be very wary to update their firmware, however our Ultrasn0w application will unlock all recent (including the current) 3GS and 3G baseband firmware versions. Once you are jailbroken using PwnageTool 4.01, install ultrasn0w from Cydia and you’ll be unlocked.
  • Remember! This baseband unlock situation is rare, should you upgrade your iPhone blindly at the next iOS release please don’t expect an unlock – but for now you are OK (whatever state your baseband is in).
Now that you know what devices to use PwnageTool 4.0.1 with, start jailbreaking iOS4 and enjoy the iPhone Hacks!

Redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta – How To Jailbreak iOS 4

Redsn0w is iPhone Dev Team’s tool to jailbreak iOS (iPhone OS). Much like iPhone Dev Team’s PwnageTool or ih8sn0w’s sn0wbreeze, both which can jailbreak iOS4 as well. Redsn0w is both for Mac OS X and Windows PC.

This is a beta release of redsn0w. It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days. Nothing new is revealed to Apple, and it’s not applicable to the iPad.

This beta release supports:

  • iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G only (for now)
  • Mac OSX x86 and Windows only (for now)
  • the 4.0 official FW only (for now)

If you’ve already updated your device to 4.0, the next steps are:

  1. Make sure you’ve already activated your iPhone3G or iPod Touch 2G with iTunes
  2. Launch the beta redsn0w 0.9.5b5
  3. Select your stock 4.0 ipsw (you’ve already used this to update your device to 4.0)
  4. Select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”. Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.
  5. When your device comes back up, you’ll notice Cydia has a blank white icon Allow Cydia to reorganize, then accept the update it offers. When Cydia restarts, you should see its real logo now.

This is BETA software and many things may go wrong, use strictly at your own risk!

Jailbreaking iPhone Is Now Legal In The US

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has just announced that they have won two critical exceptions to the DMCA, which makes it legal for users to jailbreak and unlock their iPhone.

For the 2009 rulemaking, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) had filed an exemption request with the U.S. Copyright Office to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) related to jailbreaking iPhone.

At that time, Apple had told the U.S. Copyright Office that it believed jailbreaking an iPhone is a violation of the DMCA and infringes on its copyright. Apple also informed the Copyright Office that the exception request by Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) was not acceptable as the very act of jailbreaking the iPhone results in copyright infringement.

Apple also cautions users against jailbreaking their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

EFF's argument was that jailbreaking iPhone is protected under fair-use doctrines, and that the Copyright Office should grant an exemption because "the culture of tinkering (or hacking, if you prefer) is an important part of our innovation economy."

The U.S Copyright Office agree with EFF’s views and has exempted jailbreaking and unlocking iPhone from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Here are the excerpts from EFF’s press statement that is relevant to iPhone users:

The exemptions were granted as part of a statutorily proscribed rulemaking process, conducted every three years to mitigate the danger the DMCA poses to legitimate, non-infringing uses of copyrighted materials.

The first of EFF's three successful requests clarifies the legality of cell phone "jailbreaking" — software modifications that liberate iPhones and other handsets to run applications from sources other than those approved by the phone maker.

In its reasoning in favor of EFF's jailbreaking exemption, the Copyright Office rejected Apple's claim that copyright law prevents people from installing unapproved programs on iPhones: "When one jailbreaks a smartphone in order to make the operating system on that phone interoperable with an independently created application that has not been approved by the maker of the smartphone or the maker of its operating system, the modifications that are made purely for the purpose of such interoperability are fair uses."

"Copyright law has long held that making programs interoperable is fair use," confirmed Corynne McSherry, EFF's Senior Staff Attorney. "It's gratifying that the Copyright Office acknowledges this right and agrees that the anticircumvention laws should not interfere with interoperability."

On EFF's request, the Librarian of Congress renewed a 2006 rule exempting cell phone unlocking so handsets can be used with other telecommunications carriers. Cell phone unlockers have been successfully sued under the DMCA, even though there is no copyright infringement involved in the unlocking. Digital locks on cell phones make it harder to resell, reuse, or recycle the handset, prompting EFF to ask for renewal of this rule on behalf of our clients, The Wireless Alliance, ReCellular and Flipswap. However, the 2009 rule has been modified so that it only applies to used mobile phones, not new ones.

This doesn’t change things much for iPhone users as the cat and mouse game between Apple and the iPhone hacking community will continue but from a legal point of view they can now jailbreak their iPhone without fear of copyright infringement penalties. You can checkout the latest update on jailbreak iPhone from the iPhone Dev Team.

In case of unlocking iPhone, carriers can still prevent unlocking in many circumstances and can pursue cases against individuals by citing breach of contract under the carriers' Terms of Service.

Apple has always maintained that unauthorized modification of the iOS is a violation of the iPhone end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple can deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software. It will interesting to see if Apple will be able to deny service under the new federal policies.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this ground breaking ruling by the US Copyright Office so please drop us a line in the comments.

Thanks everyone for the tip!

How To Make iPhone 3G On iOS 4 Faster

While a vast majority of iPhone users are enjoying the new features and performance improvement in the latest iOS, some iPhone 3G users have reported that iOS 4 has slowed down their iPhone, which has forced some of them to downgrade to iPhone OS 3.1.3.

It has also motivated someone to create a spoof Apple ad demonstrating iPhone 3G running iOS 4.

Comex, the iPhone hacking expert who has brought popular jailbreaking tools like Spirit found a post on ModMyI forums, which is recommending iPhone 3G users to disable Spotlight for iPhone to make it faster.

According to ModMyI forum user:

iPhone 3G apparently has trouble keeping up with indexing, ever since 3.x. Two days ago, I turned off Spotlight search (Settings-General-Home Button-Spotlight search-switch off all you don't use) because I rarely, if ever, used it.

Up to this day, my poor old 3G with iOS is way snappier than it was before, and I wouldn't hesitate to say it's as snappy as with 3.1.3.

You can checkout the video where he has compared an iPhone 3G running iOS 4 with an iPhone 3G running iOS 4:

To disable Spotlight for iPhone, follow these simple steps:

    • Launch Settings app

    • Go to General –> Spotlight Search

    • Deselect indexing for all or as many items as possible

We haven’t tried it out but if you’re observing a performance issue on your iPhone 3G after upgrading to iOS 4 then there is no harm in trying this tip before you decide to downgrade to iPhone OS 3.1.3.

In case you haven’t seen the spoof ad then check it out below:

We wonder if similar improvements will be seen if Spotlight for iPhone is disable on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

As always, let us know how it goes and if you’ve observed any improvements.

AT&T Expands Wi-Fi Hotzone Project; Also Plans To Fix iPhone 4 Data Upload Issue Over Next 2 To 3 Weeks

Few months back, AT&T announced a pilot Wi-Fi project in the bustling Times Square area of New York called "Hotzone". The project sought to reduce data congestion issues in high smartphone density areas by automatically switching users in the hotzone from 3G network to Wi-Fi.

The carrier was expected to deploy similar Wi-Fi hotzones in other network congested areas across the country.

AT&T has now announced that they are expanding the Wi-Fi hotzone project to Charlotte in North Carolina. The new Wi-Fi hotzone shall be located over the South Brevard street from the area surrounding the NASCAR Hall of Fame plaza to East Trade Street. The hotzone can also be accessed by AT&T customers who use the Lynx light rail. In the media statement, AT&T has indicated that a third hotzone shall be deployed in Chicago "in the coming weeks".

The carrier has also been battling other iPhone-related issues in recent times. Several iPhone customers had complained earlier this month about a drastic drop in the data upload speed on AT&T's 3G network. The carrier had attributed the issue to a software bug on an Alcatel-Lucent equipment.

We have now heard from AT&T that a fix for the issue has been developed and that the patch shall be deployed in a phased manner over the next two to three weeks. According to a statement released yesterday, the software patch would restore the uplink speeds for the high speed data services that make use of the network's HSUPA technology. Users affected by the issue may hence have to wait for up to three weeks to see normal data upload speeds.

Despite concerns about network congestion, AT&T has seen impressive growth over the past quarter. The company has announced activations of 3.2 million iPhones during the second quarter which is a new company record. However, only 27% of these activations are reported to have come from new customers. For a perspective, the corresponding number in earlier quarters was steadily over the 40% mark.

AT&T is speculated to lose its exclusive carrier status within the next two quarters. It will be interesting to see how the entry of new iPhone carriers will affect the network performance and subscriber growth moving forward.

Apple: Jailbreaking iPhone May Void The Warranty

Copyright Office of the U.S. Library of Congress had introduced two critical exceptions to the DMCA, which makes it legal for users to jailbreak and unlock their iPhone in the US.

Cult of Mac have reported that Apple has issued an official response to the new federal policies on jailbreaking and unlocking iPhone.

Apple’s spokesperson provided Cult Of Mac the following statement:

Apple's goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience. As we've said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably.

This is in line with the support document where Apple has cautioned users against jailbreaking their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

As we had mentioned earlier, this doesn’t change things much for iPhone users as the cat and mouse game between Apple and the iPhone hacking community will continue but from a legal point of view they can now jailbreak their iPhone without fear of copyright infringement penalties.

If you’re worried about void your iPhone’s warranty then you can always follow our step by step guide to revirginize your iPhone to bring it back to factory conditions.

Do you think Apple is right in denying service to users who have jailbroken their iPhone? Will it stop you from jailbreaking your iPhone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

How To Activate Your iPhone Without Official iPhone Carrier SIM

How To Activate Your iPhone Without Official iPhone Carrier SIM

iPhone 4

Sherif Hasim has figured out an easy way to activate iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G without needing the official iPhone carrier SIM.

Please note it doesn’t unlock your iPhone but it activates it. But it helps you to hactivate your iPhone without the need to hack your iPhone.

Sherif had also discovered an exploit in the baseband (05.12.01) that was bundled with iPhone OS 3.1.3 earlier in the year.

Activating your iPhone means giving it access to the Home screen by telling your iPhone that you are using one of the iPhone's official carriers. Activating your iPhone is done through iTunes in order to use it with an official iPhone carrier.

Hactivation is the process of activating your iPhone without using an official iPhone carrier SIM. Until now, you needed jailbreaking tools like PwnageTool to hactivate your iPhone. With Hasim’s method, you can hactivate your iPhone using phone book sim card, without actually going through the pains of hacking it.

Sherif Hasim has also posted a video to show you how it activate your iPhone without the official iPhone carrier SIM:

Sherif has provided some useful information about the phone book sim cards:

Use any phonebook sim card, they are there in radioshak, mobile phone shops or any mobile tech moles , any phone book simcard will do the trick, no need for programmable sims, all those phonebook sims used to save ur contacts and transfer them have a universal ICCIDs preprogrammed so they all work.

To all those asking, I use this one Phone book Test card from DITS - Cdma Gsm Forum Mygsmindia. Yet, I used three other types and all work the same.

Please note that the phonebook sim cards will work as is in iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G but you’ll need to convert it into a micro-SIM in case of iPhone 4.

So with this activation solution, iPhone users will be able to use this method to activate (or hacktivate) their iPhone and use tools like Spirit or Redsn0w to jailbreak (which can’t be used for hactivation) their iPhone and then use Ultrasn0w to unlock their iPhone.

As always, please let us know how it goes.

Apple Has Started 'Soft' SHSH Blob Checks With iOS 4

iPhone Dev Team has just reported that with iOS 4 or higher, Apple has started putting ‘soft’ SHSH blob checks in the firmware.

This means that like iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, if iTunes can’t get the SHSH blobs for iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2nd generation (due to signing window being closed), the iTunes restore will error out.

According to Dev Team, soft SHSH blob check can be easily bypassed by using Redsn0w and PwnageTool.

Cydia has also started saving the SHSH blobs for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G.

Dev Team reports:

Those of you with jailbroken iPhone3G and ipt2G devices may now have noticed Cydia starting to save your SHSH blobs too, just like it does for iPhone3GS, ipt3G and later devices. That’s because starting with 4.0, Apple started putting a “soft” SHSH blob check in the firmware. The SHSH blob check is very real in the sense that if iTunes can’t get your blobs (because the Apple signing window has closed), the iTunes restore will error out. But it’s “soft” in the sense that those devices can always use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get past the error (the bootroms themselves for those devices don’t require blobs to be in the firmware files, unlike the newer bootroms).

So, Cydia is doing this to allow you to continue to use iTunes to restore to 4.x on iPhone3G and ipt2g outside of Apple’s signing window without needing to use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get around Apple’s annoying new restriction.

So if you were wondering why Cydia has started storing SHSH blobs for your iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G, this should answer the question.
